TIFPL put a call out on Instagram to find out what YOU guys wanted to hear us talk about, and we had a bunch of fantastic, thoughtful questions in response. We recorded for two hours so these episodes will be coming out in 2 parts. We touch on a wide variety of subjects including how we get hyped for a lift, whether or not we’re “girls who do both”, awkward and embarrassing mistakes we’ve made in the gym or with training, we talk to our younger selves, and about young people and strength sports. And so much more! This was really fun and we will definitely be doing it again sometime!
YouTube and show notes to come.
TIFPL put a call out on Instagram to find out what YOU guys wanted to hear us talk about, and you delivered a ton of fantastic, thoughtful questions in response. You asked, we answered, and then we just kept talking. Check out the first episode of our two-part series!
With 4 out of the 5 guests on the show having recently competed in both national and local competitions, this episode is full of fun for lifters at every level of the game. Your questions covered everything from how we psyche up for a lift (hint: summon the power of at least two demons), to the biggest mistakes we’ve made in our powerlifting careers, to the advice we would give our newbie selves. Although we each have different advice, – don’t be afraid to start, don’t be afraid to be ambitious, and don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel something is off with a coach or your environment – and we’ve all made different mistakes, ultimately we want everyone at every stage of their powerlifting career to have fun celebrating their bad-ass strength. Finally, we get a little feminist-y as we discuss #getyouagirlwhocandoboth. If you’d like to help us hi-jack this hashtag, listen on! This time, it is about the feels. Episode 7 is a subjective discussion of the positives and negatives of comparison and creeping your competition; is social media destroying you or driving you? We talk realistically about when it can be beneficial, detrimental, or just downright irrelevant. We also explore lifting self-esteem through injury or downtime, and the importance of cutting yourself some slack and celebrating the small stuff. Continue reading Episode 7 | Are you actually human garbage? What are you going to do about it?
Talkin’ RPE, hormones, and pondering if the XX and the XY are really all that different in the powerlifting world Continue reading Episode 6 | It’s Not About Your Feels, Man! With Mike Tuchscherer and Bryce Lewis
Sorry about the sound quality on this one, guys! Worth it for the content, and a great excuse for us to invite these guys back!
This episode we are joined by two of Alberta’s strongest coaches, Bryce Krawczyk of Calgary Barbell and Shane Martin of Smartlifts, to shoot the shit about the ins and outs of dat coaching life. From an athlete’s perspective, we explore the when, who and how of getting a coach, and we get the inside scoop from the coach’s side on what it’s like dealing with athletes. New this episode: LIGHTNING ROUND! 15 questions, no time to think! Good times for all. Continue reading Episode 5 | On coaching, being a coach, picking a coach. With Shane Martin and Bryce Krawczyk
And what I mean by that is, fuck letting your resolutions be something you torture yourself about in the year to come. New beginnings should be about growth and goal-setting, not holding yourself to ultimatums.
By dictionary definition, a resolution in the context of the New Year is “a firm decision to do or not to do something”; which sounds like a fine setup for some nasty self-talk when you fail at doing or not doing the thing, or not thinking something through and having way too high an expectation relative to your ability.
This year, we don’t want you to make a resolution. We want you to make a plan
This week on episode 4 of the first season of GutsXGritXGrind, the This is Female Powerlifting podcast, we summon the spirit of the festive season to bring you a Santa hat full of powerlifting-related, rant-invoking topics. Take four dirtbag powerlifters, two angel powerlifters (to balance it out) and a five minute timer that signals when it’s time for whiskey shots and you have the worst thing we’ve ever done. The best thing we’ve ever done? Sorry mum. Sorry everyone. Continue reading Episode 4 | A Shitbag Christmas
This Is Female Powerlifting’s first podcast guest, international level IPF powerlifter Dani Savoie (now Martin!) regales us with tales from her experience at the recent 2016 IPF Open World Championships, the fun and not so fun parts of equipped powerlifting, what it’s like to run a meet, and gives us the inside scoop on what it’s really like to date and marry another powerlifter. We also go down the rabbit hole of Gym PDA and whether that’s cool or not. (mostly not… let us know if you disagree!) Continue reading Episode 3 | Suit Up! Equipped Powerlifting and Competing on the World Stage
